Description:

This training session is the necessary middle step in getting qualified to use the Artisan's Asylum lampworking studio independently as a member. Students will review and demonstrate the safe handling of gas tanks, steel tools, brass tools, graphite tools, as well as general safety precautions pertaining to work in that space.

Students who successfully complete this tool training can set up appointments for a supervised work session with Mike, which will be the last step necessary to qualify to use the Asylum lampworking equipment independently as a member.

Class Goals:

By the end of the session, students will demonstrate comfort with the following tasks:

  • Bring a tank each of O2 and C3H8 to the studio and install them
  • Turn on the kiln
  • Set the tank pressure for an individual worker, and a group of workers
  • Get a piece of metal stuck in glass and remove it
  • Make a swan, a bead, and a pendant
  • Skip a segment on the kiln
  • Clean the shop

A $10 fee to cover the cost of materials is included in the ticket price above.

Mike Soroka
